Who is Aktiv Kapital?

Aktiv Kapital ASA operated as one of the largest European purchasers of non-performing consumer credits in Europe and Canada. They had their headquarters in Norway and were founded in 1991.

In 2014 Portfolio Recovery Associates acquired Aktive Kapital as part of a $1.3billion deal. They are now known as PRA Group.

PRA Group (UK) Ltd. is now one of the UK’s largest debt collectors with a total staff of over 5,000 employees.

They typically buy defaulted accounts from banks and finance companies after payments haven’t been met for some time.

As with the majority of credit and debt service providers, PRA Group follows the CSA Code of Practice and is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Why would they contact you?

If PRA Group has contacted you, it’s most likely because you’ve failed to make your repayments on a credit account.

There are many reasons customers and borrowers can’t keep up with their payments; what’s important, is to take the steps to deal with the situation.

There are instances where a debtor changed banks or moved house and lost contact with their creditor. There could have been a family emergency or suffered the loss of a job, and their current budget makes paying the money they owe too difficult.

Whatever the reason, PRA Group should help you find a more affordable solution that’s within your budget. If you’re unsure about what to do, we can help. We can also explain, if necessary, what other options are available to you.

Do you owe Aktiv Kapital money?

If you think that you no longer owe the money you’re being chased for, it’s best to check that you do.

It could be a shared debt or a joint account that fell into arrears or a debt so old you think it should have been removed from your account.

If you do owe the money you’re being pursued for, we can let you know the simplest options to get PRA to leave you alone and to help you get your finances back on track.

How old is the debt they are collecting?

When a credit account has been inactive for 5 or 6 years (5 in Scotland, 6 in England), then it could well be statute-barred. A statute barred debt is considered to have gone past its expiry date and can no longer be chased. If a debt collector is pursuing a statute-barred debt, they could be breaking the law and liable for prosecution.

If you think your debt falls into this category, you should flag it with the relevant people and check if you can have it cancelled. Should it be found to be statute barred, you wouldn’t have to pay another penny.

Is PRA Group treating you unfairly?

Every debt collector and bailiff has to abide by standards laid out by the Financial Conduct Authority. Wherever they have seen to break those rules intentionally, they are liable to prosecution. This is for the client’s protection.

We can help protect you and your rights if:

  • You’ve been harassed to pay what you can’t afford
  • Bullied to pay money you don’t have
  • You were contacted repeatedly at work when you asked your debt collector to stop
  • It was suggested you take out additional credit to pay the account you’re currently being chased about
  • The debt collection agency have discussed your problem with your employer or family without your permission

If you’ve been mistreated in any way, as the above are just a small handful of suggestions, it’s important to check whether the regulations have been broken, your legal rights and what you can do to protect yourself.

Managing your debt

We help people manage their debt every day. It’s our job to guide you through the methods available to regain control of your finances and back into good financial health.

Not only will we help you through what is often a very stressful situation, but offer advice on how you can protect yourself from similar situations arising in the future.

We also deal with companies just like PRA Group too, so we understand the jargon, their methods and practices, and what they are and aren’t allowed to do.

Support from our trusted debt advice partners will help you determine the state of your debt to be certain you do owe the money, or if it has been statute barred.

If they can challenge the debt, they will make sure you don’t have to pay them a penny.

If, however, the debt is live, then they can help you find a debt solution that suits your circumstances to help regain control of your finances.

Your debt solution will allow you to repay what you owe with monthly payments based on what you can realistically afford each month.
