Stupidly i failed to inform the council that my partner had moved in and continued to claim council tax as a single occupier. At the time i was in debt (and still am) and trying to pay off other debts. I have no received a letter saying they are reviewing single occupancy and i must declare everyone living in the household. I understand that i will have to pay the money back but am scared as to what the council will do as this is basically fraud. i know that they wont be interested in any extenuating circumstances. Please can some one help me as im desperate.

Once the council have worked out how much you owe then you can go back to them with an offer to pay the debt back in monthly instalments. You can either do this directly or get help from a debt adviser who will negotiate with the council on your behalf. This is not fraud, but will need to be repaid.
