Am I liable for my husbands tax bill |
I bought my house in Sept 08 and at the time my partner ( now husband) was making contributions to the house. We split in June 09 and got back together in September 09 but he has made no contribututions since June 09. We got married in August 10 and I have recently found out that since he went self employed in July 09 he has not filed any tax returns or self assesment forms. If the taxman comes after him am I liable? Can they come after the house or my car both of which are solely in my name? Can they come after my saving?
Due to the stress of this we are on the verge of seperation. If we do split is there anything I should do to sever all ties and protect my assets. We are not financially tied at all and we both have our own bank accounts
Advce required urgently
Thanks

Re: Am I liable for my husbands tax bill
As you are not financially tied and the property is in your sole name the bailiffs cannot request goods or payment from you to clear your husband’s debts. Goods belonging to a third party cannot be seized to pay off another person’s debt. However, he may have developed a beneficial interest in your property by making contributions to the household between 2008 and 2009. Please seek further advice on this issue from a solicitor.
