In debt at 15 |
Can somebody help me with my query. My son who has ADHD and sometimes has anger problems that he is getting help with, but he was at school one day and he slammed a door by mistake and broke the door. They sent a bill to myself as his parent for £897.94, The letter came from the local council and I phoned them to tell them that I did not break the door to take my name off the letter. They have resent the letter with my sons name on it, he is now 16. they want the whole amount paid in full. He is staying on at school and only has pocket money and a small amount that he recieves in wages from a part time job he has washing dishes in a local hotel. He only gets £15 per week. I am not sure what to do can anyone help me.

The council are entitled to pursue your son for the debt if he is responsible for criminal damage. You need to seek legal advice before acknowledging the debt as you could challenge the council due to the nature of the incident whereby your son could have been injured by the door. It is also questionable that a replacement door and labour costs should total almost £900. If you don’t take action the creditor will have to pursue your son for the debt through the courts. Due to your son’s age he will qualify for free legal representation so it should not cost you money to pursue this with solicitors.
