my bank has just told me i can't have a debit card. |
My bank has just told me i am ineligable for a debit card until my account is in credit for 3 months. Is this correct ? even though my overdraft limit hasn't been reached. They mistakenly put a bankruptcy notice against me and then retracted it stating mistaken identity but my problems still continue. I have been told i can have a cash card to withdraw funds but it doesn't make sense, i can use a card to withdraw but can't use one to make a payment. Can they do this? My account is active but they are saying because it hasn't been in credit for a while they are refusing to sanction a debit card against my overdraft.
Re: my bank has just told me i can't have a debit card.
Yes your bank can refuse to offer you a debit card, in fact this is not uncommon, the bank is simply stating that they wish to see how you manage your account for a couple of months before issuing a debt card to you. You state you are still having problems after the bankruptcy notice has been removed from your credit reference agency file, you might want to check with the credit reference agencies to ensure it has been removed. There are 3 main credit reference agencies Equifax, Experian and Call Credit, you may need to check all 3 to ensure you are no longer being affected by this.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received from your bank then you could consider changing banks – other banks may consider you for a debit card, have a look at this site for the best deals http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/. However you would need to repay any outstanding overdraft to your existing bank before being able to close the account and you may still find that you have to wait for a few months for a debit card as you are a new customer.
