URGENT: letters sent to very distant relatives about me SCARY

Hi
I been living abroad for 5 years. My dad called me this morning and said that a distant aunt and my dad brother ( who live at different addresses ) recently received letters from Solicitors or something offical like that and that were looking for me.

They were demanding for my whereabouts and address under my maiden name.

From what I can recall some 17 years ago I left the country, basically, my family disowned me at that time as I married someone they did not approve of from a different religion and ethnic origin. I had no money and on the run.

As I could not get hold of my possessions or correspondance and was in hiding for a long while, I could not clear any of my crediit card debts and for years was unable to communicate with my direct family.

Long story cut short - peace came to the family and we were on speaking terms 6 years later. I found out that they returned all my mail and were harrassed by debt collectors for a long time. As my family did not know where I was, they did the right thing and told the truth.
Could it be to do with unpaid council tax?? from 1993 to present??

My dad moved address a few years later. And they thought that was the end of the matter.

But recently, my dad's brother and a distant relative (who do have the same surname as my maiden name) have started receiving letters demanding my whereabouts.

My dad was mortified that relatives are getting official letters about me and I am terrribly worried. How many others family relatives have been sent these letters?

I started searching the web and found your forum but could not find anything about distant relatives getting demand letters of whereabouts.

My dad who is not on speaking terms with my aunt nor too am I- has asked her to send the letter to him to view but she is being difficult and want to write back to the solicitor and give my dad's address and tell them that he knows my address. He had no choice but to accept her terms. This is so embarrassing to.

I really dont know what to do. Or why this is happening now.

Can anyone please advise me on what I should do and how to stop these distant relatives from getting letters like this.

Re: URGENT: letters sent to very distant relatives about me ...

You should seek advice regarding these debts as they should be statute barred by now which means the creditors cannot enforce them through the courts. Your family members are not liable for the debts so should ignore the creditors. They can then put in a complaint if the creditors continue to hassle them.
