UK debt collector trying to contact though I no longer live in the UK |
I stupidly, and regrettedly left Dubai in a hurry 10 years ago, and left around £3500 car loan debt, now I have discovered a debt collector in the UK is trying to contact me at an old address to recover the money supposedly for the bank in Dubai. I have not lived in the UK for a decade, and am wondering what the UK agency can do legally to recover the amount considering I am a UK national living overseas. Any advice or thoughts will be greatly appreciated. I am happy to set up a repayment scheme maybe, but wonder what I should do as I do not live in the UK?
Re: UK debt collector trying to contact though I no longer ...
I don't know about Dubai specifically - cross border debt recovery depends largely on which country you are in - but the main method to enforce a debt when the debtor is in another country is to use that country's legal system. Debt is also usually unenforceable and "statute barred" after 6 years of no contact.
I would be tempted not to respond to the creditor and to see what happens. If you do make contact and admit to the debt the 6 years will restart.
If a creditor tries to take court action against you in Dubai you should get some local advice. I think it's very unlikely.
