Who can I speak to about someone else's credit score? |
I have a joint mortgage with an ex housemate and last year he decided to move out last year. In order for me to keep the house he stayed on as a silent partner as I was unable to take over the mortgage myself but he makes no financial contribution whatsoever and I even paying him monthly as well. Last September I missed a payment on the mortgage and got in touch with the bank, set up a payment plan and have maintained this ever since, not realising that this would mean that the account has been in arrears this whole time, thus destroying his credit rating. We are now at the point where he wants to cut all financial ties with me, which i can understand but he is now looking for additional compensation for the damage to his credit rating.
I am obviously not in a position to pay this, else i would have taken on the mortgage myself but at the same time I do feel that he is being punished for something which is entirely my fault. Is there anyone I can speak to explain the situation to?
Re: Who can I speak to about someone else's credit score?
You will not be able to speak about anyone’s credit report other than your own.
If this is, as it implies, a joint mortgage then you both have joint and several liability for the debt.
EACH INDIVIDUAL is responsible for their own credit rating. Therefore, you have not had an impact on their credit rating - they have. You have only affected your own.
It was the decision of your ex housemate to have their name added to the mortgage and their decision to leave the property.
Please do ensure you are paying your mortgage before you pay any unsecured creditors as a mortgage is a priority debt, if you are in doubt please do seek advice from a debt advisor
