You need to make sure you are asking for a basic bank account.

If the Co Op has declined you for a basic account you need to ask why.
Barclays also offer a basic account to bankrupt people.
There are also credit unions and prepaid credit cards which offer some of the facilities of an account,
Its unfortunate that bank accounts are not yet a right - despite being essential for most people in the 21st century.
