You need to make sure you are asking for a basic bank account.

Here is a list on a leaflet from the financial service authority

If the Co Op has declined you for a basic account you need to ask why.

Barclays also offer a basic account to bankrupt people.

There are also credit unions and prepaid credit cards which offer some of the facilities of an account,

Its unfortunate that bank accounts are not yet a right - despite being essential for most people in the 21st century.

There is a petition elsewhere on this site I (and the Debt Advice Foundation) would encourage you to sign.
