Not lived with my parents for 12 years will a bailiff go to their house for my debt? |
I live abroad at the moment, I moved out of a rented flat in London 6 months ago, my girlfriend and I thought we were up to date on bills. It turns out we owe 1200 pounds in council tax. I only know this because the new tenant emailed me to say the Bailiff had just come round looking for us!
They have no contact details for me at the moment, but I am worried they may go to my elderly parents rented house. Can they do a search for next of Kin? I haven't lived with my parents for over 13 years. I am trying to contact the council to get it resolved and set up a payment plan (if its not too late) but due to time differences I haven't spoken to anyone yet.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Bailiff’s should not seek out next of kin as third parties cannot be held liable for other people’s debts. If you can set up a payment plan and get the debt repaid it will stop any further action and mean you will not be chased for payment, should you return to live in the UK.
