My son is 22. He was in the army for about 3 years, returned home just before Christmas, lived with us for about 6 months before moving 50 miles away with a new job. Since he left we have had visits from the bailiffs telling us that the address given by him is ours & that therefore they can take goods from the property. They also advise that as it is on behalf of the court they can attend with a locksmith & gain entry even if we are not here. I have advised them of his new address - the bailiff has spoken to him on the phone & made some arrangement - though I doubt it will be kept to. A week after that visit we received a further letter from the same enforcement agency, addressed to my son at my house arrived, demanding repayment, advising they could attend with a locksmith even when we are not home, & gain entry to confiscate goods. we are returning letters t sender but i think other debts are surfacing. Can I stop them taking my goods for his debt?

Bailiff’s cannot seize the goods of another person to pay a third parties debt. They also cannot force their way into your house or change the locks, unless you have let them into your property in the past. You have informed them of your son’s new address and they are aware of this as they have made an arrangement with him. Therefore there is no reason for them to continue to call at your property. If they call again, do not open the door to them and firmly inform them that your son does not live with you and none of his belongings are at your property.
