Re: Bailiffs attended my home for unpaid council tax, and ...

First people to speak to are your your local council.
This debt isn't going away and you really do need to address it very urgently.

If you are lucky the council will accept payments from you - after all the financial year has only just started.

You can apply to the court to set aside the bailiff warrant, contact the court which issued the liability order for advice.

Bailiffs are extremely expensive and not generally very open for negotiation. They must however be professional at all times if you feel you have grounds for complaint - first complain to your local councillor, then to the bailiff company and then the trade body they belong to

Most private bailiffs will also belong to a trade association, all of whom have complaints and grievance procedures you can use. The main trade associations are the Certificated Bailiffs Association (CBA) and the Association of Civil Enforcement Agencies (ACEA).

CBA can be contacted by writing to:
c/o Ridgefield House
14 John Dalton Street
MANCHESTER
M2 6JR
tl: 0161 839 7225

The ACEA have a website at www.acea.org.uk
