A bailiff came to my home over unpaid council tax

I was out so he left a notice. When I rang him to make payment he said that I had to give him my D.O.B and NI number. When I asked him why he needed this information his reply was I had 5 seconds to give it to him, then he would hang up and send a van round to my house to seize my goods - he also knew I was working away btw which made it worse. What I want to know is, is this kind of thing legal and why would he want that information anyway?

I gave in on my D.O.B but lied and said I could not remember my National Insurance number.

Re: A bailiff came to my home over unpaid council tax

That sounds like a threat.

It isn't legal, or at least it is against the spirit of the law and I think he wanted the info so he could look at an attachment of earnings orders. Council tax payments are a criminal matter so you should definitely make them a priority,

Contact the council that you owe the money to and try to make an arrangement with them. You can speak to your local CAB face to face but I would go down there in person rather than trying to phone them, Bailiffs are extremely expensive and you should make this debt a priority over any others.
