National Debtline

National Debtline is a UK registered charity which provides free, confidential and independent advice via the telephone or email. They're distinctive in that they provide very informative self-help packs and fact sheets for those who want to understand more about the debt solutions that exist. Interestingly, their self-help pack for England and Wales has recently been awarded the Plain English Crystal Mark so nice and easy to read then without the usual jargon.

Although they are not as high profile as charities such as Citizens Advice, National Debtline has been around since 1987 in one form or another and is one of the largest UK debt charities.

They were originally set up in conjunction with Birmingham Settlement and the Money Advice Association (now the Institute of Money Advisers) and today National Debtline is part of the Money Advice Trust, a registered charity.

According to their own website, satisfaction with the service they provide is high - 79% of callers are very satisfied with the service received and a further 15% satisfied, giving an overall satisfaction score of 94% which is impressive. More than this, 89% would definitely recommend National Debtline to someone experiencing debt difficulties.

How can we help you get out of debt?

To ensure that you get the right advice, we provide free access to expert charity debt advisors who provide unbiased debt advice. This helps those in serious debt to avoid advisors who charge excessive fees or feel it is reasonable to extend the period individuals are in debt beyond what is reasonable and fair.

We read the advice on the website after considering paying a company to make some agreements with a number of credit card companies. we sent the letters ourselves and very quickly got a reply from very helpful customer services. This was initially very embarrassing to deal with but because we offered 50%, they agreed to reduce interest to 1% and suggested an affordable payment to be reviewed in 12 months. As we have considerable equity on our property it saved us selling our home cheaper than market value and we have a large loan that will be paid off then

2 stars - only just! A lot if data collection via a host if questioning before you can get to proceed with your inquiry. My case is very complex and unique, and I felt that the representative was knowledgable in basic debt information - therefore advise was limited. Having been cut off on my first call, and having to call back was not good. There is no such thing as a free lunch, as they say, and the National Debtline are getting paid from some where. I suspect it's from the data we give them when we inquire - meaning what we say us past into others. I say service users should be told this. Citizens Advise were better.
